ABOUT

James Evans is a painter who explores alienation. He was born in Manchester in 1961 and now lives and works in Cardiff. He studied Fine Art at Cardiff College of Art and Design, receiving a BA (Hons) in 1986. Here he developed his love of exploring the effects of light and atmosphere on gatherings of figures and objects within the landscape.

His form of realism looks at scenes from the visual world and considers what lies behind and beyond them. His paintings are about the experience of being present and at the same time sensing separation. He explores the surface nature of reality, versus the range of human emotions that often contradict and challenge it.

He primarily paints with oils and regularly exhibits his work in Cardiff and beyond. He was shortlisted for the 2023 Summer Art Prize Exhibition at Cardiff MADE Gallery and Beep Painting Prize Biennial 2024, ‘I won’t stay in a world without love.’
